Shipping Container Conditions, Grades & Selection Guide

Choosing the right shipping container starts with understanding the different conditions and grades available. At Container Co LLC, we believe that an informed buyer makes the best investment. Whether you’re looking for a container for storage, transportation, or conversion, knowing the distinctions between container grades will help you select the perfect unit for your specific needs and budget.

There are three main container conditions to consider — Used, One Trip, and Refurbished — each offering unique benefits and price points. Within these categories are different grades that determine a container’s structural integrity, appearance, and overall suitability for your intended application.

1. Used Shipping Containers

Our used shipping containers are among the most popular choices for both businesses and individuals. These containers have typically spent 5 to 15 years in international shipping service before being retired from cargo use.

They often retain their original paint and shipping line markings, along with visible signs of wear such as surface rust, dents, and scratches — evidence of years of global travel.

While they may not look brand new, used containers remain structurally sound and dependable. Depending on their grade, they are ideal for storage, workshop conversions, or secure on-site facilities. Some high-grade units may still qualify for cargo transport.

2. New One Trip Containers

Our new one-trip containers are the closest you can get to brand-new. These units are manufactured in Asia, loaded with cargo only once for cost efficiency, and then shipped to our depots worldwide.

Because they make just a single trip, these containers are in excellent condition — though minor scrapes or small dents from handling are possible. This process allows Container Co LLC to reduce shipping costs and pass the savings directly to our customers.

Ideal for: premium storage, container homes, offices, and projects requiring a clean, modern appearance.

3. Refurbished Containers

Our refurbished containers are used, wind- and water-tight (WWT) units that have been professionally restored to extend their lifespan and enhance appearance. Refurbishment offers an affordable way to get a container that looks new and performs reliably.

We offer three levels of refurbishment:

  • Typical Refurbishment: Exterior prep and repainting. We remove surface rust, spot-prime exposed metal, and repaint the exterior including the roof.

  • Complete Refurbishment: Includes the full typical process plus interior painting for a cleaner, finished look.

  • Factory Refurbishment: A full overhaul featuring new interior and exterior paint, new gaskets, and updated markings — making it the best option for customers seeking a like-new appearance and performance.

Container Grades Explained

Shipping containers are further classified into grades based on age, condition, and structural integrity. Understanding these grades helps determine which option best suits your purpose.

  • Wind and Water Tight (WWT)

Our most popular grade, WWT containers are guaranteed not to leak.

While they may show visible rust, dents, or abrasions, these containers are structurally sound and weatherproof, making them an excellent choice for storage and modification projects.

  • Cargo Worthy (CW)

A Cargo Worthy container has passed inspection and is certified for international transport by sea, rail, or road.

These units feature original paint and markings, with minor cosmetic wear, but are structurally certified for export. If you’re shipping overseas, your CW container will include a valid CSC inspection sticker verifying compliance with international standards.

  • IICL (IICL-6)

Containers graded as IICL meet the strict inspection standards of the Institute of International Container Lessors (IICL) — the highest grade in used containers.

They are structurally excellent, with minimal cosmetic damage and a higher resale value. IICL containers are ideal for clients requiring top-quality containers for international use or professional modification projects.

  • As-Is Containers

As-Is containers have been heavily used or damaged and may contain holes, broken flooring, or compromised structural elements.

These units are not wind- or water-tight, and repairs may not be cost-effective. However, they can still be repurposed for non-structural uses, such as storage for non-sensitive goods or creative art projects.

How We Grade Our Containers

At Container Co LLC, every used container is thoroughly inspected and graded based on:

  • Age and mileage (years in service)

  • Structural soundness and frame integrity

  • Exterior and interior condition

  • Rust, dents, or corrosion levels

  • Damage and repair history

  • Storage and climate exposure

Our transparent grading system ensures that you know exactly what you’re buying, empowering you to make the best decision for your budget and project requirements.
